Kootenai River Habitat Restoration
While all of the Tribe’s projects focus on restoring various components of the Kootenai River ecosystem, the Tribe has two projects that focus specifically on restoring physical Kootenai River habitat.

The largest of these, and the one that this website focuses on—the Kootenai River Habitat Restoration Program—will be implemented in three phases starting upstream in the Kootenai River Braided Reach and working generally downstream through the Meander Reaches. The project is designed to address some of the many human impacts that have occurred in the Kootenai watershed. Project actions are being designed to avoid negative impacts to the local community, while also fostering positive local benefits. The program will include measures to improve instream habitat (e.g., depth, velocity and habitat complexity), address bank erosion and land loss, sediment loading, and to reconnect and reestablish floodplain habitats. The second restoration project, Reconnecting the Kootenai River with the Historical Floodplain, focuses specifically on targeted tributaries that will be restored by returning them to their original channel and reconnecting them with the Kootenai River, thus restoring critical floodplain habitat.

This program is funded by the Bonneville Power Administration through the Northwest Power and Conservation Council's Columbia River Basin Fish & Wildlife Program (Project Number 200200200). The Kootenai Tribe also received funding to purchase construction materials for the Phase 1 project under a Idaho Department of Environmental Quality Section 319 grant. In addition, the Tribe has entered a Cooperative Conservation Partnership Initiative partnership agreement with the Natural Resources Conservation Service that will provide funding for complementary and compatible activities in the Kootenai River Habitat Restoration program area.
